Getting Started Getting Started Connecting a printer NOTE You must supply the proper printer cable. If one did not come with your printer, you may purchase one from an electronics or computer store. If your printer is ECP- or IEEE-compliant, make sure your printer cable is an IEEE 1284 cable. You can connect a USB-compatible printer to your computer through the USB ports. To determine if the printer is USB- compatible, check its documentation. To achieve the connection, you need a suitable USB cable, which may come with your printer. You can purchase one from a computer or electronics store. To connect a USB printer: 1 Plug the USB connector into one of the USB ports on your computer 2 Plug the printer’s power cable into a live AC outlet. To connect a parallel printer: Connecting the parallel printer cable while the computer is on may damage the printer, the computer, or both. 1 Connect the printer cable to the printer and to the computer’s parallel port. If this is not the case, then you must install the printer driver for the model of printer that is connected to your computer. You install the printer driver either by following the instructions indicated in your printer manual, or by using the operating system Add Printer Wizard. If you plan to set up a printer later, click Cancel. Using the Add Printer Wizard To set up a printer with the Add Printer Wizard: 1 Click Start, Control Panel, then Printers and Other Hardware. 2 Select Printers and Faxes.
