Planning the SNAX/HLS Environment
Step 5. Planning for Programming Standards
RA-NON-RETRYABLE. If the value is RA-NON-RETRYABLE, then the request violates
the SNA protocol specified by the current bind. The request is not executable until the
session is CLOSED and restarted under a BIND that allows the request. In general, a
request that causes such a value to be returned causes session termination by either the
SNAX/HLS server or the session partner. In all likelihood, you will have to change
the PROFILE of the session to point to another BIND or redefine the SNAX/HLS
application to the gateway session partner. Be aware that some SNAX/HLS verbs (for
example, SEND-STATUS) are not allowed under some session profiles (for example,
FM PROFILE 2).
Awareness of Send or
Before protocols can be used between applications, the applications must agree on
Receive Mode
which partner has the right to send data. SNA provides an indicator, known as the
Change-Direction Indicator (CDI) that signals the receiver that it should now become a
sender.
If a full-duplex protocol (FDX) is specified in the BIND image, the setting of
PREPARE-TO-RECEIVE-IND in a SEND-DATA verb is ignored and CDI is not set.
SNA states that CDI set while in FDX send-receive mode is illegal.
If a half-duplex flip-flop protocol (HDX-FF) is specified in the BIND image, SNA
requires that the session partners be aware of their send/receive state. In such
sessions, partners exchange the right to send data by using the CD indicator
(PREPARE-TO-RECEIVE-IND is set to Y). The receiving partner detects this
indicator by noticing that ENTER-SEND-STATE-IND is set to Y on the last piece
of data received. If the protocol also uses transactions, the user should be aware that
when a session is between transactions, either side has the right to send data. In
accordance with the SNA rules, SNAX/HLS will ignore any attempt to specify both
PREPARE-TO-RECEIVE-IND is set to Y and END-TRANSACTION-IND is set
to Y on the last portion of a message.
If a half-duplex contention protocol (HDX-CONT) is specified in the BIND image,
SNA does not enforce any direction control between messages. Instead, each side has
the right to begin a new message, with contention being resolved as specified in the
BIND image. In such a protocol, the PREPARE-TO-RECEIVE-IND on the
SEND-DATA verb, and the corresponding ENTER-SEND-STATE-IND on the
RECEIVE-DATA reply serves only as a signal between the partners, and is often used
to suggest that the receiver of PREPARE-TO-RECEIVE-IND is set to Y transmit
data in return.
In both half-duplex environments, SNA allows the partner currently receiving data to
signal the sender with a request for the right to send. Note, however, that this signal is
a request, whereas the PREPARE-TO-RECEIVE-IND and ENTER-SEND-STATE-IND
are rigidly enforced in HDX-FF protocols.
Keeping all these indicators is not a major application design problem if the HLS
application monitors the following indicators:
ENTER-SEND-STATE-IND on RECEIVE-DATA replies
ENTER-RECEIVE-STATE-IND on SEND-DATA replies.
