Paper clamp 7. Dust extraction adaptor 8. Washable dust bag 9. Removable side clip (x 2) (for carbon brush access) 10. Sandpaper hole punch 11. Power ON neon light 7 3 2 9 1 11 4 8 10 5 6 Switching on and off 1. Connect the plug to the power supply. 2. Push the on/off switch (1) forward to start the motor. CAUTION. Make sure the tool is not resting on any surface when it is switched on. 3. Pull the on/off switch (1) back to stop the motor. 4. Hold the tool securely and make sure that you have full control at all times. Fitting a sanding sheet WARNING. Always ensure that the tool is switched off and the plug is removed from the power point before making any adjustments or maintenance procedures. 1. Before fitting sandpaper, remove any dust or debris from the hooks and loops of the base. 2. Match the holes in a suitable sheet with the holes in the base. 3. Simply press the sheet to the base to attach it. 4. To remove the sheet, peel it away from the base. TIP. To ensure you maximise the life of the hook and loop base, carefully peel off the papers rather than rip them off quickly as this will break the loops and eventually lessen the effectiveness of the grip. CAUTION. Take care to regularly clean out the build up of dust on the base underneath the sandpaper and not to let the sandpaper wear completely down before replacing it. Failure to observe these two precautionary measures can lead to damage to the hooks and loops on the platen and the sandpaper will not attach properly. 5. Ordinary (non-Hook & Loop type) sanding sheets can also be used. 6. Release the paper clamp (5) from both sides of the sander. 7. Insert the end of the sandpaper under one clamp and pull the paper tight over the base (4) ensuring the holes align with those in the base and then clamp the other side. 8. The paper should be kept tightly clamped over the base, otherwise there could be excessive wear of the base material. WARNING. Never use the sander unless the entire base is fitted with sandpaper or another type of pad. Dust extraction WARNING. Always ensure that the tool is switched off and the plug is removed from the power point before making any adjustments or maintenance procedures. 1. Attach the dust extraction canister (3) to the sander by pushing and twisting the bayonet fitting in a similar action to inserting a light globe into a lamp socket. TIP: For optimum dust extraction, remove and empty the canister (3) when it is no more than half full. 2. Remove the cap from the end of the canister (3) to access the internal bag when you wish to replace or clean the bag. The bag can be washed. Make sure the bag is completely dry before replacing it. Using the sander 1. The sander is designed for sanding wood, plastic and similar materials. It can be used for sanding back and finishing the surface. 2. This sander is a handy size for medium jobs. 3. Wear safety goggles, a dust mask and ear defenders. 4. The whole sanding pad must rest on the workpiece. 5. Switch the sander on while it is off the workpiece and move it over the surface to be smoothed in a circular motion. 6. Grip the rear of the handle (2) in one hand and push down on the front of the handle with the other hand. Take care to hold the sander parallel to the work. 7. Use moderate pressure only, enough to control the machine without labouring the motor. TIP. When sanding a rough or painted surface, start off with a course grit and work your way through to a finer one until the desired finish is achieved. 8. If there are still marks on your work after sanding, try either going back to a coarser grade and sanding the marks out before recommencing with the original choice of grit, or try using a new piece of sandpaper to eliminate the unwanted marks before going on to a finer grit and finishing the job. WARNING. Do not use the sander in wet or damp conditions. To maximise the life of the motor do not use the sander continuously for more than 10-15 min at a time. Allow 5-10 min rest period between usage. The manufacturer recommends the use of a residual current device with a tripping current of 30mA or less. Selecting the right grade of sandpaper WARNING. Always ensure that the tool is switched off and the plug is removed from the power point before making any adjustments or maintenance procedures. • Different grades of sanding paper can be purchased from your local hardware store. Available grades are: Coarse, Medium and Fine. • Use a coarse grit to sand down rough finishes, medium grit to smooth the work and fine grit to finish off. • It is best to make a trial run on a scrap piece of material to determine the optimum grades of sandpaper for a particular job. If there are still marks on your work after sanding, try either going back to a coarser grade and sanding the marks out before recommencing with the original choice of grit, or try using a new piece of sandpaper to eliminate the unwanted marks before going on to a finer grit and finishing the job.
