Just below the top on the front of the handset is a shallow oval concave. This is the earpiece. The smooth surface below the earpiece is the display. Immediately below the display are three buttons: the left one is the FUNCTION button, the middle one is the MUTE button and the right one is the CALLER IQ button. The FUNCTION button is also the 2WAY REC button. In the center below these buttons is the NAVIGATOR control, which is a large rectangular control with four active areas. The active areas are the 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions. The 12 and 6 o'clock positions are the UP and DOWN keys respectively. These are also the volume control up and down keys. The 3 and 9 o'clock positions are the right and left arrow keys. These are also the EDIT and CH keys respectively. To the upper left of the NAVIGATOR control, an oval button with a clipped edge is the TALK button. The oval button below the TALK button is the SPEAKERPHONE button. To the upper right of the NAVIGATOR control, an oval button with a clipped edge is the OFF button. The oval button below the OFF button is the HOLD button. The HOLD button is also the INTERCOM or CLEAR button. Below these buttons is the telephone keypad laid out in the conventional telephone arrangement with a "nib" on the 5 button. On the lower left below the keypad is the FLASH button. The FLASH button is also the CALL WAIT or PLAYBACK button. On the lower right of the keypad is the REDIAL button. The REDIAL button is also the PAUSE button. The indentation between the FLASH and REDIAL button is the microphone. The 2 metal ridges at the bottom of the handset are the charge contacts. The headset jack is on the left side of the handset, at almost the same height as the top row of the buttons. It has a rubber cover that can be opened by pulling down, and is not removable. Base unit With the base unit facing you, the antenna should be straight up on the right side, towards the back of the unit. The handset's charging cradle is on the left of the base unit. This is an inch deep depression. For charging, the bottom of the handset gets put into the cradle with the handset buttons facing up. The unit will beep when the handset is properly placed in the cradle for charging. The handset can be placed in the cradle in an inverted position. Moving toward the back of the unit on the right of the cradle, there is a large rectangular textured area. This is the speaker. In front of the speaker to the left is a smooth rectangular area. This is the display. Below the display is a row of 4 thin buttons. The left-most one is the MEMO button. Immediately to the right is the ERASE button. The third button from the left is the REPEAT button. The right-most is SKIP button. The REPEAT button and the SKIP button are marked with a raised "nib". To the right of the display are two buttons in a vertical column. The thin button is the GREETING button. Immediately below it is the ANSWER ON square button with an indicator light at the upper right. To the right of the ANSWER ON button is the STOP button with a raised "nib". On the right of the STOP button, there is a large round button. It is the MESSAGE PLAYBACK button. Moving down to the front of the unit, 2 thin buttons with a raised nib are the VOLUME buttons. The left one is to decrease, the right one is to increase. To the left of these buttons, there is the IN USE indicator light. The IN USE indicator light is also CHARGE or HOLD indicator light.
