If you know the program’s location, type the command line. For a program in the Windows® folder, type just the program name. Otherwise, type the full file path. For example, to access WordPad, type: c:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe, then click OK. HINT: To run the same program again, click the arrow to the right of the text box and select the command line from the drop-down list. . If you do not know the location, you can search for it by clicking Start, then Search, and then following the on- screen instructions. Saving your work Before you turn off the computer, save your work on the internal storage drive or external media. This is one of the most important rules of computing. TECHNICAL NOTE: Save your data even when you are using the Standby command, in case the main battery discharges before you return to work. Saving documents is quick and easy, so it is a good idea to get in the habit of saving frequently. Many programs offer a feature that saves documents at regular intervals. Check your program’s documentation to see if it has an automatic save feature. 80 80 80 Saving your work Saving files 1 In your Windows®-based application, click File, and then Save. If you are working with a document that already has a file name, this is all you need to do. If you created a new document, your program displays a Save As dialog box. Use this dialog box to specify where to store the document and to give it a file name. Some applications do not support long file names and require file names limited to no more than eight characters. Using a file extension Most programs assign an extension to the file name that identifies the file as being created in the program with a particular format. For example, Microsoft® Word saves files with a .doc extension. Any file name with an extension of “.doc” is assumed to be a Microsoft® Word file. Creating your own extension is usually unwise, since the program is unlikely to recognize a strange extension and may refuse to handle your file correctly.
