When you purchase Bluetooth devices, check their operating conditions. 47 47 nNUsing your VAIO computer Bluetooth security The Bluetooth wireless technology has an authentication function, which allows you to control with whom you communicate. With the authentication function, you can avoid any anonymous Bluetooth devices accessing your notebook. The first time two Bluetooth devices communicate, a common Passkey ( a password required for authentication) should be determined for both devices to be registered. Once a device is registered, there is no need to reenter the Passkey. You can change your settings in order not to be discovered by other Bluetooth devices or you can set a limit. Communicating with another Bluetooth device You can transfer data to and from other Bluetooth devices such as another notebook, a mobile phone or a modem station without using cables. To communicate with another Bluetooth device, proceed as follows: 1 Turn on the Wireless switch. 2 Choose Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Bluetooth Devices. The Bluetooth Device dialog appears. 3 Click Add. The Add Bluetooth Device Wizard appears. 4 Select the check box My device is set up and ready to be found and then click Next. 5 Select the remote device you want to connect to. If necessary, scroll up and down in the Bluetooth Device List to make your selection. Then click Next. 48 48 nNUsing your VAIO computer 6 Choose one of the following options: . If you want Windows to provide you with a password, select Choose a Passkey for me. . If the documentation of the other Bluetooth device contains a password, click Use the passkey found in the documentation and enter the passkey. . If you want to create your own password, click Let me use my own passkey and enter a passkey. . If your device does not use a password, click Don’t use a passkey. 7 Click Next to continue. 8 Once the remote device has been successfully authenticated, click Finish. . The passkey can be different each time, but must be the same at both ends. For certain devices, such as a mouse, no passkey can be entered. 49 49 nNUsing your VAIO computer Communicating with another Bluetooth device using Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard You can easily transfer data, such as files or pictures, to another Bluetooth device. To transfer data from or to another Bluetooth device, proceed as follows: 1 Choose Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard. The Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard appears. 2 Click Next to continue. Stopping the Bluetooth connection To stop the Bluetooth connection, proceed as follows, turn off the Wireless switch at the front of your notebook. The Bluetooth LED turns off. Troubleshooting Bluetooth I cannot use the Bluetooth functions . If the Bluetooth LED is off, turn on the Wireless switch. . You cannot use the Bluetooth function when the computer is in a power saving mode. Return to normal mode, then turn on the Wireless switch located on your notebook. I cannot find the Bluetooth device with which I want to communicate . If the connected device is also connected to other devices, it may not appear on the Devices tab in the in your Remote Bluetooth Device Panel dialog or you may not be able to communicate with the device. . Check that the Bluetooth function of the device with which you want to communicate is on. See the other device’s manual for more details. . If the device with which you want to communicate is already communicating with another Bluetooth device, it may not be found or it may not be able to communicate with your notebook. 50 50 nNUsing your VAIO computer . To allow other Bluetooth devices to communicate with your notebook, go to the Options tab in the Bluetooth Device dialog box and select the checkbox Allow Bluetooth devices to connect to this computer. For more information on the the Bluetooth Device dialog box, see Communicating with another Bluetooth device (page 47) . The data transfer speed is slow The data transfer speed depends on the obstacles and/ or the distance between the two devices, but also on the radio wave quality, the operating system and the software used. Try to move your notebook or try to place the two devices closer together. I cannot communicate with the other device although the distance between both devices is within 10 metres . The data transfer distance can be shorter than 10 metres depending on existing obstacles between the two devices, on radio wave quality, on the operating system and the software used.
