According to a March 2006national poll commissioned bythe American Speech-Language- Hearing Association, 40% ofstudents reportedly set theirmusic players’ volume above 85 decibels, which is the level hearing experts recommend not beexceeded. If music can be heard coming from a student's headphone, the volume is too loud andthe student is at risk of experiencing hearing loss. Hearing loss can lead to many problems in school including: difficulty withacademic achievement in language arts, vocabulary, arithmetic, and problemsolving. Students with hearing loss score lower on achievement tests, and havegreater needs for special education or extra support in the classroom.
